It is in
Rouen
that was held on Saturday 11th of March the first event of the FFESSM French championship, the French federation affiliated to CMAS.
Those FFESSM competitions are new in
France
. Until 2005 this federation would not organise freediving competitions and record attempts. This was a real brake to the development of freediving in
France
which was pursued by AIDA France.
However, according to the competitor list of this event, several AIDA word record holders will be participating. Mifsud, Frolla, and, as a guest star, Mr. Coste, himself…. It worked wonder. All the freedivers from north of Fra
nce came to see them.
All the communication was done on those guests and on the record attempt of Mifsud in dynamic. Mifsud is asking for two AIDA France judges …. He is going to attempt a French record… which cannot be a world record.
Tension is rising a few days before the competition between AIDA France and the organizer. AIDA is totally left aside and does not like the communication around the “world record” attempt.
The situation deteriorates. Follows a period of intense e-mails exchanges between AIDA, FFESSM and the competitors concerned.
On the 11th of March the two judges are on the edge of the pool. Mifsud performs a wonderful 213 m, very clean, which he will not forget to announce as a new world record. For sure, the show is on, and everyone temporarily forgets the nonsense and the problems during the organisation of the event.
A few passionate AIDA athletes came to get heard. They are here wearing t-shirts where you can read: “apnea is AIDA” Soon everyone plays the game and a collective picture shooting session is improvised.
Carlos on the other hand is already going back home. Jérôme just get time to ask him a few questions…
Carlos Coste interview :"My sport is also my passion, and I will do all I can for its good development"
Jérôme: Carlos, do you like being in France?
Carlos Coste : Yes, of course, and especially because France is at the origin of modern freediving, without forgetting the knowledge and the high level of the French freedivers and AIDA. But I like Europe in general.
I am here because I was invited by the organizers of this event to present the videos of my records. But for me this is not really a competition, because it is in line with CMAS, which for me has not a good enough level either a serious regulation.
Therefore, I only compete in the dynamic event, as a training in the aim to prepare for two big AIDA competitions this year, and for my AIDA world record attempts.
J. : When will you come back to France, and for which occasion, maybe for the 2006 Nice Open organised by the CIPA?
C.C. : At the moment, I don’t have any other sport plans for this year in France. I will be just a few days in Paris, with Gabriela, my friend, early April. Of course if my schedule and my finances allow it, I will be in May in Nice.
But at the moment I plan to be in Greece for the «Summer games» competition in June/July
and at the team world championships, in Egypt, in October, my two big competitions of the year! Without forgetting the record attempts in Egypt, one during the two first weeks of May, the other for the No Limits in September.
J. : What depth would you like to reach during that No Limit attempt ?
C.C. : (laugh) Well, between –175m and –200m, as an official AIDA record of course!
Otherwise I would like to tell you about what happened a month ago in Venezuela: I left my national diving federation (Affiliated to CMAS), and I work now only for AIDA, but mainly developing a freediving federation in Venezuela, with AIDA, of course. This is my work plan!
Modern freediving and the sport of freediving have been organised in the world by AIDA, which therefore is the only possible future for freediving. What CMAS is now planning to organise and impose has and will not have any future in the world and for the freedivers.
J. : Thanks Carlos for taking a few minutes to answer our questions.
