Re-thinking the Monofin

The LunocetThe Subhuman project is the brain child of inventor Ted Ciamillo, who plans to cross the Atlantic Ocean on a biomechanical submarine. While interesting in it self, freedivers will be especially interested in the subproject of this adventure called “The Lunocet”, which is a type of monofin that mimics the biomechanical propulsion of Dolphins. While already discussed before and yet to be seen or tried by freedivers, the project certainly looks interesting and gives food for thought in the cold winter months when we all yearn for the sea…

For more information check the subhuman project web site or this PDF.

How long until we see more completely different solutions to this problem? Or is this just a marketing gimmic and the current monofins are just “perfect”?

  1. I’ve been following this quite closely since mid 2007 however it seems as though things have gone a little quiet on the project. Ted was due to begin his journey Dec 2007 however it appears as if it’s been delayed for some reason as there are no updates on the site?

  2. Once a guy came to our center. He wanted us to try his monofin prototype on deep dives.

When he took it out of his bag we all thought he was jocking.

Imagine two footpockets fixed on a 50 cm carbon axis. Then, going to the sides out of this axis, some fiber feathers with a pronounced “rocker”, all separated from each other by 5 cm gaps.

He said that after observing eagles flying over his farm in the french alps, he decided to realise that monofin. This guy is an aeronautcal engeneer.

We made a few dives with it between 50 and 60 m. It was hard to give an opinion…it was so different from all we had ever experienced before. It worked though.

  3. Hmm, I wonder is that the same thing Eero once showed me a picture of? Would you happen to have a picture somewhere?

That thing looked really REALLY weird, kind of like a long sceleton or something. I think he said he’d seen it in Nice.

  4. Right…kind of ribcage.
Actually it was made out of nordic skiing skis.
I’ll try to find the pic.
